A wood fire is cozy and fun. The smell of wood smoke is unpleasant for some, tasty for others. In addition to being unhealthy, wood smoke is also one of the largest causes of particulate matter.

Wood smoke can lead to health issues. The fine particles released from burning one kilogram of wood in a fire basket are equivalent to the fine particle emissions of a truck driving 3000 km.

In 2025, burning wood in an outdoor fire pit will no longer be permitted in the municipality of Utrecht. Utrecht wants to be the first major city to set a new heating standard. It is expected that other major cities will soon follow. To improve air quality and therefore the health of residents, the municipality of Utrecht is considering a subsidy scheme to limit the use of polluting old wood stoves. The Utrecht Fuel Standard should serve as an example for other municipalities.

Older fireplaces and outdoor stoves in particular make a major contribution to particulate matter emissions from private wood burning. Filters on heaters could be a solution, but this is relatively expensive. In addition, there are currently no really good and effective filters available and they require very regular maintenance.

The way we heat our homes in the future will completely change. Better insulated houses, less heating, no longer heating our entire house.
