Malfunction, defect, or problem with a fireplace? Use our handy troubleshooting tool.

Electric fireplace troubleshooting

Electric fireplaces are essentially maintenance-free. However, no electric fireplace will continue to function flawlessly forever. Eventually, the most wear-sensitive parts will start to cause problems. This does not mean that the fireplace needs to be replaced immediately. Many issues or malfunctions with fireplaces can often be easily resolved by yourself.

Read more about common problems or malfunctions with electric fireplaces or search directly by fireplace type.

Bioethanol fireplace malfunction

Xaralyn bio-ethanol fireplaces are maintenance-free. The most common problems can be traced back to user errors.

A bio-ethanol fireplace has a real flame. Once the fireplace has been used even once, there will be clear signs of use. Signs of use do not affect the functioning of the fireplace.

Is your fireplace not listed?

It is probably older than 6 years or was not supplied by Xaralyn.

An electric fireplace has an economic life of 6 years. Repair of older fireplaces can sometimes be very expensive because parts are expensive or no longer available. From a cost point of view, it is often better to replace these fireplaces with a newer (often more economical) fireplace.

This electric fireplace uses Opti-Myst water vapor technology. The fireplace uses normal tap water.

  1. Water with less limescale extends the lifetime of the evaporator or evaporator unit. However, if there are too few minerals in the water, the fireplace will not function or will not function properly. Check whether the fireplace works properly with normal tap water.
  2. The evaporator (transducer) or evaporator unit (sump) is a wearing part with a limited life. If you get very little or no water vapor after a while, it is wise to replace it. You can order parts in our webshop. You can read how to replace these parts in the user manual.

Lamps have a limited lifespan.

  1. The heat generated by the lamps is used to make the water vapour rise. For the best flame effect, we recommend replacing the entire set of lamps at the same time.
  2. Replacement parts can be ordered through our webshop. The user manual explains how to replace these components.

Maintenance tips for electric fireplaces

Electric fireplaces are gaining popularity due to their convenience, efficiency, and stylish designs. Unlike traditional wood or gas fireplaces, electric fireplaces require less maintenance, but they still need regular care to function optimally and look their best. Here are some essential maintenance tips for electric fireplaces.

1. Regularly remove dust and dirt

One of the simplest yet most important maintenance tasks is regularly dusting your electric fireplace. Dust and dirt can accumulate on the screen and inside the fireplace, affecting performance and appearance.

  • Dusting: Use a soft, dry cloth to dust the surface of the fireplace.
  • Cleaning the Interior: Carefully remove the glass front (if possible) and dust the interior with a soft cloth. Avoid using water or cleaning agents, as they can damage the electronic components.

2. Check and clean the fans

Electric fireplaces use fans to distribute heat throughout the room. These fans can attract dust and dirt, reducing their efficiency and potentially causing overheating.

  • Fan Cleaning: Turn off the fireplace and let it cool before cleaning the fan. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove dust from the fan blades. Refer to the manual for specific instructions on how to access the fans.

3. Inspect and clean the heating elements

Although electric fireplaces have fewer issues with their heating elements, it is still important to inspect and clean them regularly.

  • Visual Inspection: Look for signs of wear or damage on the heating elements. If you see anything unusual, contact a professional.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft brush to gently remove dust and dirt from the heating elements. Make sure the fireplace is turned off and cooled down before doing this.

4. Check the electronic components

Electric fireplaces contain various electronic components, such as thermostats, switches, and lighting, which need to be checked regularly to ensure they function correctly.

  • Visual Inspection: Check the wiring and connections for loose or damaged parts.
  • Testing Components: Regularly test the thermostat and other control functions to ensure they are working properly.

5. Maintain the glass front

The glass front of an electric fireplace can develop stains and streaks from dust and touch.

  • Cleaning the glass: Use a glass cleaner suitable for fireplace glass. Spray the cleaner on a soft cloth and gently wipe the glass clean. Avoid abrasive cleaners as they can cause scratches.

6. Check the decorative elements

Many electric fireplaces feature decorative elements like artificial logs or crystals. These elements add to the realistic appearance of the fireplace and should be kept in good condition.

  • Cleaning decorative elements: Carefully remove the decorative elements and dust them with a soft cloth. Replace them according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Conclusion

Maintaining an electric fireplace is relatively simple but crucial for the longevity and performance of the unit. By regularly removing dust and dirt, keeping the fans and heating elements clean, and performing periodic inspections, you can enjoy a warm and cozy fireplace for years. Follow these tips to ensure your electric fireplace remains in top condition.

The most common problems with a bioethanol fireplace

We list the most common malfunctions that can usually be resolved by yourself

 Manual

 Spare parts

A Xaralyn bioethanol burner has a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Misuse may cause a malfunction that is not covered by the warranty.

Our patented bioethanol burners are equipped with a specially developed ceramic stone. The evaporation of the bioethanol is therefore more controlled.

  1. The burner should always be completely filled with bioethanol before igniting.
  2. Only use pure bioethanol (alcohol percentage >95%).
  1. The bioethanol fireplace can be extinguished using the slider or the additional supplied extinguishing plate. Without oxygen, there is no fire.
  2. If the burner does not go out immediately with the slider, try again with a different speed.
  3. The slider is not intended to regulate the flame height. The slider may deform as a result, causing it to no longer close properly. After cooling down, the slider usually closes properly again.

Our patented bioethanol burners are equipped with a specially developed ceramic stone for this purpose. This allows for better controlled evaporation of the bioethanol.

  1. Fire consumes oxygen. Ensure proper ventilation for sufficient air supply.
  2. Burning bio-ethanol is harmless. Depending on the source of the bio-ethanol, a minimal odor may be detected. If this odor is found unpleasant, consider trying a different type or brand.
  3. Keep decorative materials away from the flame of the bio-ethanol fireplace.

A Xaralyn bioethanol burner is housed in an additional safety tray, known as an outer tray, for safety reasons. If the burner is not filled correctly, bioethanol may spill into this outer tray.
Once the bioethanol burner reaches its operating temperature, any bioethanol present in the outer tray will evaporate. The pressure created by this vapour can cause the actual burner insert to lift slightly out of the outer tray.
In this situation, the burner itself has only risen slightly and can easily be pressed back into the outer tray with a small amount of force..

  1. For safety reasons, a Xaralyn bioethanol burner is placed in an extra container, a so-called outer container. If the burner is not filled correctly, bioethanol can end up in this outer container. As soon as the bioethanol burner has reached the right temperature, the bioethanol will evaporate in the outer box. As soon as this bioethanol has completely evaporated, the sound will disappear.
  2. The outer container of the bioethanol burner contains ceramic wool. The ceramic wool also prevents these 'pop' sounds. Check that it was not accidentally removed during installation.
  1. A bioethanol fireplace is a utensil. A fireplace that is used will show signs of use.
  2. The supplied glass plates ensure that the flame burns more slowly (moves less). Your bio-ethanol burner will stay beautiful longer if you use the glass plates correctly.
  3. The lacquer of the burner is only optical. If desired, you can repaint your bioethanol burner with a heat-resistant paint. Tape the opening where you see the stone well and treat the part to be sprayed according to the instructions of the paint manufacturer.
