Bioethanol is derived from plants and/or wood residues. Synthetic ethanol is made from petroleum.
When pure bioethanol is burned, only water (H2O) + Carbon dioxide (CO2) are released. The minimal amounts of CO2 released are reabsorbed by plants. This is why we call it a renewable fuel.
Is all bio-ethanol the same?
Especially with bioethanol, there are small amounts of by-products involved. These by-products affect the quality.
By-products in bioethanol affect the odor, flame height, and burn time of this fuel.
Bio-ethanol for use in fireplaces, open fires, or bioethanol table fires.

Bio-ethanol also dissolves paint or varnishes. So always be careful not to spill bioethanol on your furniture or fireplace surround!

Consumer packaging for bioethanol

The safest way to use is bioethanol packaged per liter. The material of the liter bottles is fully recyclable and does not dissolve in ethanol. Combined with a bottle with a spray cap, this is the safest packaging.
Bioethanol packaged in bulk packaging often needs to be transferred with some risks. These jerry cans are also made of a softer material that eventually dissolves in bioethanol, releasing toxic substances when burned.
Safe storage of bio-ethanol
Bioethanol can ignite above 12 degrees Celsius. Therefore, always store bioethanol in a cool place in the house.
Alcohol evaporates at 78.4 degrees Celsius. With a small package, you reduce the formation of alcohol vapors that can ignite.
For home use, liter bottles are the safest.
Alcohol percentage in bioethanol
Pure bioethanol contains 98% alcohol and 2% water (natural balance).
Excise duties are levied on alcohol for consumption. To render bio-ethanol unsuitable for consumption, it is denatured (an additive that makes it unsuitable for consumption). After denaturation, the alcohol percentage in bioethanol is approximately 95-96%.
If the alcohol percentage in the bio-ethanol is lower than 95%, other additives such as water are used.
Bioethanol with a scent or fragrance
A fragrance can also be added to bioethanol. When bioethanol is burned in a fireplace, a light scent is released.
You can buy bioethanol with a scent ready-made or add a few drops of aromatic oil yourself.
Bioethanol with a scent contains a small amount of oil. Unlike pure bio-ethanol, this can produce very light soot residues.
As an alternative to bioethanol with an aroma or scent, you can also place a bowl of aromatic oil near the fireplace.
Accessories for use in combination with bioethanol
A bioethanol fireplace is a fireplace with real flames. When safely burning a bioethanol fireplace, avoid using flammable materials.
